  Meet    Dawoon "Davin" Jung

Contemporary Visual Artist

Artist Statement

My practice explores the intersection of cultural heritage and modern technical advancement, serving as a map of the Korean-American experience. I navigate this landscape by merging traditional iconography, such as the Hahoetal mask, Hangul (Korean Letters), and Hanbok motifs (Korean Traditional clothing), with the raw, unrefined  textures of contemporary abstraction. At the heart of my work is the concept of “Unfolding the Scaffold.” The scaffold represents the liminal, yet rigid structures we build to support our identities; by deconstructing these frameworks, I explore the tension between ancestral memory and the fragmented acceleration of the digital age.

My visual language recontextualizes ancient Korean mediums like Hanji (Korean traditional paper) and gold leaf.  Evoking Gustav Klimt, this opulence invites immersive engagement. The structural grace is deliberately animated by the legacy of Jackson Pollock’s "action painting." Spontaneous gestures and a collision of varied materials infuse each composition with movement.

Through the integration of found materials and raw detritus, my work explores a philosophy of material resilience. My work challenges the viewer to find a sense of home within layers where the grace of ancient calligraphy meets the raw energy of modern abstraction. In this collision of materials, I invite the viewer to witness the beauty of a reconstructed self, which remains both fragile and enduring.
