My work, titled Eom Ma (the Korean word for "Mom"), is an exploration of the profound and often silent sacrifice inherent in motherhood. Central to the piece is a mother figure whose silhouette blends into a radiant golden forest, a space she has cultivated through a lifetime of devotion to ensure her child’s future is bright and secure.
I draw deeply from my Korean heritage, specifically the cultural weight of a mother’s duty. While she carries the immense responsibility of her role, I have painted her as the "little girl" she remains inside, a part of her identity that is often lost to the demands of sacrifice. The white chrysanthemum she carries, a flower traditionally brought to funerals in Korea, serves as a poignant symbol of this loss: the death of the girl she once was. Through this work, I aim to honor the quiet worth of mothers who vanish into the beautiful, golden worlds they build for others.
